Control by Factors Distinct from the S Transforming Principle of the Amount of Capsular Polysaccharide Produced by Type Iii Pneumococci
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pneumococci can possess the normal S transforming principle and yet produce amounts of capsular polysaccharide much less than would be expected if the quantity formed depended only on the nature of the S transforming principle.

CONTROL BY FACTORS DISTINCT FROM THE S TRANSFORMING P R I N C I P L E OF THE AMOUNT OF CAPSULAR POLYSACCHARIDE PRODUCED BY TYPE I I I PNEUMOCOCCI BY COLIN M. MAcLEOD, M.D., Al~O
Mutants of several pneumococcal types have been described which form smaller amounts of capsular polysaccharides than the parent or normally encapsulated strain from which they derived. S transforming principles from these mutants confer on certain R strains of pneumococcus the capacity to produce amounts of polysaccharide characteristic of the S mutants. I t has been suggested that the transfo...
متن کاملAdditive Effects of Certain Transforming Agents from Some Variants of Pneumococcus
It has proved possible to transform an extreme rough variant of pneumococcus back to the rough state by the action of the desoxyribonucleate fractions of either rough or Type III smooth pneumococci. In a second step, the rough pneumococci produced by this transformation were further changed to the Type III smooth state by means of the desoxyribonucleate fraction of Type III smooth organisms. Wi...
متن کاملQualitative differences in the behavior of pneumoncoccal deoxyribonucleic acids transforming to the same capsular type.
A method is described for estimating quantitatively the frequency of transformation of pneumococci to new capsular types. It is found that, when S-(III) cells are exposed to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from wild-type I strains, transformation to SI occurs at a frequency 20 to 60 times that of transformation to the binary type SI-III. SI markers on DNA isolated from binary strains behave qualita...
متن کاملStepwise Intratype Transformation of Pneumococcus from R to S by Way of a Variant Intermediate in Capsular Polysaccharide Production
1. A variant intermediate between the classical R and S forms has been isolated by selective procedures from a rough strain of pneumococcus originally derived from Type II S. 2. The intermediate variant D39/Int53 is avirulent for mice, forms rough colonies, and does not possess a demonstrable capsule. However, it synthesizes SSSII which is immunologically indistinguishable from that produced by...
متن کاملAcquisition of M Protein by Pneumococci through Transformation Reactions
Acquisition by pneumococcal variants of M protein and of capsular polysaccharide different from those present in the parent strain has been effected in vitro by means of transforming reactions with extracts of heterologous encapsulated pneumococci. Similar transformations have been accomplished in vivo with heat-killed vaccines as the transforming agents. Independent variation of pneumococcal c...
